Berkeley Bound

Tomorrow, I will be flying back to SFO from Kelowna via Vancouver.  I feel slightly terrible to be getting on a plane the day before Thanksgiving as virus cases escalate everywhere but I had always planned to come home at this time so I figure if I don’t come back now, it’s not clear when I will be able to.  I’m packing my own lunch to eat in the Vancouver airport and will be masked, wiping surfaces, and spraying my hands regularly along the way.  Fraser will pick me up at the other end (and he has just recovered from Covid so is a safe person to be around).  Wish me luck!

We are in Vernon now and since we left Vancouver on the 13th, the weather has changed dramatically.  We arrived in Vernon to 5 inches of snow and, though it has not snowed again since we’ve been here, conditions have been rather wintery.  Still, we’ve gotten out almost every day for a hike.  Here I am with Moose on one hike and John with Moose on another.

Vernon often has a low layer of fog during the winter which isn’t very cheerful but can be atmospheric.  I took a hike by myself to Cosens Bay and was reminded me of The Hound of the Baskervilles.  We recently watched Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch playing a modern Sherlock and even though it ended up, like many series, somewhat ridiculous, we still enjoyed it.

In addition to hikes, we also take drives to pretty places within an hour of John’s house.  One drive we took was to an Italian cheese shop in Salmon Arm.  On the way are the most gorgeous farms with the rocky, snowy hills behind them.

Another outing was to the trestles up in the hills above Kelowna.  We’ve gone to this area during the summer and ridden our bikes over the historic trestles (including with friends from California Barbara and Marianne last summer) that were part of a railway line that closed many decades ago.  This is the first time we’ve gone there in the winter and it was a very different scene but still gorgeous.  Can anyone enlighten me as to where one is supposed to look while taking a selfie.  No matter where I gaze, it is always the wrong place!

Finally, here’s John on our hike yesterday.  He loves the cowboy hat as it’s made of wool and keeps his head warm and the snow and wind off his neck but I think he also likes the cowboy look.  As long as he doesn’t trade his motorcycle for a stallion, we’ll be fine.

I hope to see some of you back in the Bay Area his winter.  This is the end of the blog, at least for now.  Thanks so much for reading!  April

PS:  Janet Yellen, Yeah!
